Trade between Egypt and Sudan has faced significant disruptions, with truck movements halted at the Qustul border crossing since mid-October 2026. This halt follows the killing of two Egyptian truck drivers in Khartoum, raising security concerns among drivers. The stoppage has led to delays in essential goods and commercial contract suspensions, prompting traders to use the more expensive river transport as an alternative.

Protests have erupted in Sudan's Northern State, where the local economy heavily relies on trade with Egypt. Protesters demand the resumption of smooth goods flow and easing of import restrictions. In response, Sudanese authorities have begun easing some customs restrictions on essential goods and are working to restore normal truck movements.

Egyptian authorities suspended truck crossings at the Qustul border on October 15, 2026, following the deaths of two drivers and the injury of a third. The decision requires trucks bound for Qustul to remain at a city council-controlled yard, barring their movement until new instructions are issued. Exceptions include passenger vehicles, buses, and individual travelers, who are allowed to cross.

Egyptian Consul General in Halfa, Bassel Taman, visited the Ashkit border crossing to assess the situation and facilitate smoother commercial exchanges. He aimed to address congestion and streamline trade processes. Despite these efforts, the restoration of normal trade flow remains contingent on addressing drivers' security concerns and overcoming administrative hurdles.

A Sudanese trader revealed that some drivers are reluctant to enter Sudan following the deaths of their colleagues. This reluctance has led to irregular and unreliable shipments, further complicating trade dynamics. Recent agreements have been made to transport food supplies to the border for onward movement by Sudanese trucks, but the process is inconsistent and trade continues to be negatively impacted.
