Anduril and Qualcomm to Produce US-Made Laptops by 2027

Defense contractor Anduril and chipmaker Qualcomm have announced a partnership to manufacture laptops entirely within the United States. The first model, codenamed BlueChip, is scheduled for release in 2027. This initiative aims to meet Buy American standards at launch and represents a significant shift in the computer industry, where no major US companies currently produce laptops domestically.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, highlighting a long-term goal to encourage the creation of a fully domestic supply chain for computers. This move comes at a time when the US has seen no major computer companies, including Apple, Dell, HP, and Microsoft, manufacture their laptops within the country. The last instance of strategic assembly in the US was to comply with President Donald Trump's policies.

Anduril and Qualcomm's partnership is expected to face challenges, primarily due to the lack of a domestic supply chain for computer components. The companies have not yet disclosed specific details about the supply chain or the cost of the BlueChip laptop. Additionally, the partnership will need to navigate regulatory hurdles and ensure compliance with Buy American standards, which require a significant portion of the product's components to be made in the US.

Industry experts have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of creating a fully domestic supply chain for computers. The global nature of the tech industry, with components sourced from various countries, poses a significant obstacle.
