Binance Freezes $3 Billion in Assets After Cyber Attack

Binance, a major cryptocurrency exchange, has frozen around $3 billion in digital assets following a significant cybersecurity breach. The incident, one of the largest in the history of cryptocurrency exchanges, was detected late last week. The platform swiftly took action to mitigate the damage, with stablecoin companies Circle and Tether also playing a role in halting the movement of affected assets.
Binance confirmed the freeze to its users, assuring them that the platform is working diligently to address the issue. The exchange has not yet provided a specific timeline for when the affected assets will be unfrozen or when users can expect to access their funds again.
Stablecoin companies Circle and Tether were quick to respond to the suspected cyber attack. They immediately disabled the movement of assets linked to the breach, which helped to contain the potential spread of the incident.
Binance has not yet disclosed the exact nature of the cyber attack or how it was executed. However, the exchange has assured users that it is conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
This is not the first time Binance has faced security challenges. In 2019, the exchange experienced a significant security breach that resulted in the loss of around 7,000 bitcoins, valued at approximately $40 million at the time. However, Binance was able to cover the losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU).
