Deep divisions over the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East cast a shadow over the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta, USA, on 30 and 31 October 2023.

The two-day meeting, hosted by the United States, which holds the G20 presidency this year, focused on trade imbalances and building an alliance to counter China's control over critical minerals. However, the economic impacts of ongoing conflicts remained a primary concern for many G20 members.

South Africa was notably absent from the invitation list for the ministerial meeting, while Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, was confirmed to attend. This decision heightened tensions, with some European officials suggesting separate group photos, one including Lavrov and another without him.

The meeting brought together foreign ministers from the world's 20 largest economies. The U.S. aimed to rally allies around issues such as trade imbalances and strategic competition with China, particularly concerning critical minerals.

Despite these efforts, the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East dominated discussions. The economic repercussions of these conflicts were a significant concern for many attendees, overshadowing other agenda items.

The absence of South Africa from the invitation list added to the complexity of the meeting. The decision not to invite South Africa, while including Russia, was seen as a strategic move by the U.S., but it also sparked debate among G20 members.

The presence of Sergei Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Minister, further complicated the dynamics. Some European officials proposed taking two separate group photos—one with Lavrov and another without him—to address the sensitivities surrounding Russia's involvement in the conflicts.
