Niger Journalist Moussa Kaka Detained for Two Months

Moussa Kaka, a prominent journalist in Niger, was detained on August 31, 2023, and has not been seen in public since.
Kaka was on his way home from his media office in Niamey when he disappeared. His whereabouts remained unknown for several weeks until the Nigerien Minister of Justice confirmed to Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in early October that Kaka was being held and was alive.
Two months after his detention, various human rights organizations, as well as Kaka's colleagues, have repeatedly called for his release. As of now, Kaka has not been allowed to see his family or consult with a lawyer.
Kaka is known for his extensive coverage of Nigerien news and has been a familiar voice on radio for many years. His detention has sparked international concern and calls for his immediate release.
The circumstances surrounding Kaka's arrest and detention remain unclear, with no official charges or reasons provided by the authorities. This lack of transparency has added to the growing concern among journalists and human rights advocates.
International organizations, including RSF, have urged the Nigerien government to provide information about Kaka's whereabouts and the reasons for his detention. They have also called for his immediate release and access to legal representation.
Kaka's colleagues and supporters continue to demand his freedom, highlighting the importance of press freedom and the right to a fair trial. They argue that his detention sets a dangerous precedent for journalists in Niger and beyond.
