New Study Challenges Date of Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night'

Scientists have proposed a new date for Vincent van Gogh's renowned painting 'The Starry Night,' challenging the long-accepted belief that it was created in June 1889. A study published in the journal Scientific Reports on October 22 argues that the night sky depicted in the painting more accurately reflects conditions from July 1889.
The research, conducted by South Korean scientists, employs a multidisciplinary approach. It combines astronomical analysis of star patterns, contemporary weather models, and historical context from van Gogh's letters. The study aims to resolve inconsistencies in previous astronomical interpretations, which were limited by the conventional June dating.
According to the researchers, the celestial forms in 'The Starry Night' do not align with the sky as it would have appeared in June 1889. Instead, the star positions and other celestial details better match the night sky of July 1889. This finding suggests that van Gogh may have drawn inspiration from a specific night sky view visible from his asylum window in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, where he was confined for a year.
The artist's time at the asylum followed a tumultuous period, including the infamous incident where he severed his left ear. The view from his asylum room window has long been thought to have inspired 'The Starry Night,' which is now part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan.
The study's authors, Elijah Jeong-hyun Kim, Suna Kang, Jungwoo Song, and Ho Jin, emphasize the need to reconsider the long-held June dating of the painting. Their work highlights the potential of a multidisciplinary framework in art historical research, integrating scientific methods with traditional art historical inquiry.
CONTEXT: This development is significant as it could alter the understanding of one of the most iconic works in Western art. 'The Starry Night' is not only a masterpiece of Post-Impressionism but also a key piece in the narrative of van Gogh's life and mental health struggles. The new findings could provide fresh insights into the artist's creative process and the environmental influences on his work.
