Tanzanian Opposition Leader Threatens Hunger Strike Over Detention Conditions

Tundu Lissu, the leader of the main opposition party in Tanzania, has announced plans to commence a hunger strike on October 26, 2026, in protest against his detention conditions. The strike is a response to restrictions on his confidential communications with his legal team, despite a court ruling that such restrictions are unlawful.
Lissu has been in detention since April 2025, facing charges of treason. His trial is scheduled to conclude with a verdict on November 6, 2026, with the possibility of a death sentence if found guilty.
The restrictions on Lissu's communications with his lawyers have been a point of contention, with his defense team arguing that they impede his ability to prepare for his trial effectively.
Lissu's hunger strike threat comes amid broader concerns about the state of political opposition and freedom in Tanzania. His case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by opposition figures in the country, as well as the broader issues of political freedoms and human rights.
