European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has announced her intention to step down from her position on February 7, 2027, nearly nine months before the end of her term. The announcement was made during a press conference on Thursday, where Lagarde cited a desire for greater freedom to address issues beyond the ECB’s monetary policy mandate.

Lagarde, who has led the ECB since November 2019, explained that her early departure would allow her to engage more freely on a broader range of global issues. She noted that the ECB’s governance rules, which require officials to maintain neutrality and focus on monetary policy, have influenced her decision to step down. Lagarde’s term was originally scheduled to conclude on October 31, 2027.

Lagarde informed the ECB’s Governing Council and European Council President António Costa of her decision on Thursday. She emphasized that her departure would not disrupt the institution’s operations, as the process to identify her successor is already underway. The ECB’s Governing Council thanked her following the announcement, giving her a standing ovation.

The succession process will follow the nomination procedure outlined in Article 283 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The new ECB president will be appointed by the European Council. Lagarde’s early departure also allows European leaders to choose a new ECB president before France’s presidential election in 2027. Other senior ECB positions are also expected to change next year.

The ECB president leads the Governing Council, which sets interest rates for the 21 countries that use the euro. The decisions made by the ECB affect borrowing costs for households and businesses, including mortgages and corporate investments. The central bank also plays a central role in responding to economic and financial crises across the Eurozone.

Lagarde’s decision comes as the Eurozone faces several economic challenges, including inflation and geopolitical uncertainties. Her successor will inherit a complex economic landscape and will be tasked with navigating these issues while maintaining the stability of the Eurozone’s financial system.
