Tax Audits Disrupted by Missing Documents in Morocco

Tax authorities in Morocco have reported the disappearance of essential financial documents, disrupting ongoing tax audits. The issue has affected 85 cases, primarily in Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier. The audits, which began recently, have raised suspicions about the loss of documents, including commercial invoices, bank statements, and financial records. The tax authorities have sent inquiries to the companies involved, requesting details about the circumstances surrounding the loss of these documents, which are crucial for verifying tax declarations.
Sources familiar with the situation revealed that the inquiries focus on determining the dates and nature of the missing documents, as well as the periods they cover. The authorities are also investigating whether the losses are due to theft, fires, or floods. Companies are being asked to provide evidence supporting their claims and explaining why they could not provide the required documents during the audits.
The tax authorities have expressed concern over the timing of the document disappearances, which coincided with the start of the audit process. Some of the missing documents are related to financial transactions under scrutiny, prompting a broader investigation into how companies store their financial archives and comply with legal obligations to provide necessary documentation.
The audits have also extended to companies with previous tax deficits and old outstanding debts related to Value Added Tax (VAT). The absence of supporting documents has made it difficult to verify the accuracy of reported amounts and to ensure compliance with tax laws. This could potentially lead to a reassessment of certain amounts if their legitimacy cannot be proven.
Tax inspectors are particularly focused on verifying whether the disappearance of financial documents is linked to transactions under review, including expenses and costs claimed in calculating tax deficits, and discounts related to outstanding VAT debts. The investigation aims to ensure the integrity of the tax system and the accuracy of financial reporting by companies.
