Labor Crisis Looms Over Olive Harvest in Morocco

Moroccan farmers in the northern regions are bracing for a challenging olive harvest season, facing a severe labor shortage and rising wages. The upcoming harvest, set to begin soon, is already causing concern among farmers who struggled last year due to labor issues.

Farmers report significant challenges in securing workers for the harvest. Bashir Ghrafi, a notable olive producer in the outskirts of Casablanca, began his search for workers earlier this year after failing to harvest around 300 olive trees last season due to labor shortages. Ghrafi expressed his frustration, stating that the lack of workers forced him to leave many trees unharvested, prompting him to start his search for labor earlier this year.

The daily wage for olive harvest workers ranges from 200 to 300 dirhams, depending on the field's nature and the trees' height. Ghrafi mentioned considering negotiations with local families to share the harvest in exchange for their labor, highlighting the desperation among farmers.

Sid Ahmed Stitou, head of an economic interest group in the Wazan region and a professional actor in the sector, confirmed a worsening labor crisis. He noted that the high demand for labor is driving up wages, with some workers now earning up to 350 dirhams per day. This financial burden is particularly heavy for small-scale farmers. Stitou attributed the complexity of the harvest to factors including the lack of pruning, which leaves trees occupying large areas, and the mountainous terrain and tree height, which pose risks to workers.

Stitou also predicted that the rising costs of harvesting could significantly impact farmers' incomes, further exacerbating the crisis.
