Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to resume military operations against Iran, according to a report by the American news website Axios. The request comes ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, scheduled for November 3.

Netanyahu has been pushing for new strikes against Iran, while Trump prefers to continue negotiations with Tehran and grant it more time, a stance that has raised concerns for the Israeli Prime Minister.

According to Axios, citing two Israeli and American sources, Trump and Netanyahu held a phone call on Saturday to discuss the U.S.-Iran negotiations and the timing of potential military actions. The Israeli source described the conversation as 'difficult,' while the American source deemed it 'direct.'

This development follows a series of military exchanges between the U.S., Israel, and Iran. The U.S. and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on February 28, to which Tehran responded with retaliatory attacks. A memorandum to cease hostilities was reached in mid-June, but exchanges resumed shortly thereafter. Direct confrontations have since ceased, though Washington continues to impose economic pressures on Iran.

Netanyahu's push for renewed military action against Iran comes amidst growing tensions in the region. The Israeli Prime Minister has long advocated for a tough stance against Iran, citing concerns over Iran's nuclear program and its support for regional proxies.

Trump, on the other hand, has expressed a willingness to engage in diplomatic efforts with Iran. In 2018, he withdrew the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a landmark nuclear deal aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions. Since then, Trump has imposed stringent economic sanctions on Iran, but has also indicated openness to negotiations without preconditions.

The differing approaches of Netanyahu and Trump highlight the complex dynamics at play in the Middle East. While Israel seeks to counter what it perceives as existential threats from Iran, the U.S. appears to be navigating a path between military action and diplomacy.

The outcome of the U.S. midterm elections could influence the direction of U.S. policy towards Iran. A shift in congressional dynamics might either embolden or constrain Trump's approach to the region. Meanwhile, the Iranian government continues to face significant economic pressures, which could impact its willingness to engage in negotiations or respond to military actions.

The situation remains fluid, with both military and diplomatic options on the table. The next steps from the U.S. and Israel will be closely watched by regional actors and the international community alike.
