Global markets are closely watching Apple's earnings report, scheduled for release later this Monday, as investors seek reassurance amid volatility in the tech sector and geopolitical uncertainties. Asian stock markets stabilized during Monday's trading, with investors anticipating Apple's results, which could help alleviate concerns about substantial spending on artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, oil prices retreated from recent highs as Iranian-Qatari talks continued.

Apple stands out as one of the few tech companies that has maintained relative stability, having not spent billions on data centers. Its shares have risen for the fourth consecutive month, surpassing Nvidia to become the world's most valuable company by market capitalization. Analysts predict that Apple will report quarterly earnings of $2 per share and revenues of $113 billion, compared to earnings of $1.85 per share in the same period last year. Markets are also awaiting any indications from Apple regarding the initial sales performance of the iPhone 18, following the start of pre-orders in mid-October.

These expectations contributed to a 0.4% increase in futures for the S&P 500 index, while Nasdaq futures rose by 0.8%. The tech-heavy index had lost about 7% in October, its worst monthly performance since the tariff turmoil in April 2025. Markets are in need of positive indicators, as concerns over negative cash flows and the scale of capital expenditure related to artificial intelligence have raised investor anxiety and driven up the cost of insurance against corporate defaults sharply last week. Losses in Intel's stock, which fell by about 29% on Friday, added pressure on other chip companies, including AMD. Additionally, the U.S. midterm elections introduced another layer of uncertainty, as a Democratic victory in either or both houses of Congress could impose further political hurdles to data center expansion.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs expect capital expenditure by major tech companies providing cloud services to approach $800 billion this year, rising to $1.2 trillion by 2027. In contrast, analysts anticipate a slowdown in the growth of earnings for companies listed in the S&P 500 index, from around 30% in 2026 to 18% in the following year. Ben Snyder, head of U.S. equity strategy at Goldman Sachs, noted in a memo that corporate results highlighted the fundamental challenge facing equity investors.

Oil prices have been volatile, influenced by ongoing Iranian-Qatari talks and broader geopolitical tensions. The retreat in oil prices from recent highs reflects the market's sensitivity to these negotiations and their potential impact on global energy supplies. Investors are closely monitoring these developments, as they could significantly affect market sentiment and commodity prices. The outcome of the Iranian-Qatari talks will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of oil prices and broader market stability.
