The eighth edition of the Gnaoua Festival in the Netherlands will take place in The Hague from October 28 to November 7, 2026. The festival will feature Moroccan artists, teachers, and musicians from diverse artistic backgrounds, showcasing traditional Moroccan Gnaoua music alongside contemporary musical styles under the theme 'Gnaoua Connects the Worlds'.

The festival, initiated by the 'Multicultural Youth Voice' Foundation in 2018, aims to promote Gnaoua music in the Dutch cultural scene through a program that includes concerts, workshops, and artistic encounters. The festival brings together different generations and musical experiences, with Mustafa Berrbouch, the festival's artistic director, emphasizing the importance of presenting Gnaoua music as a living Moroccan heritage that carries a rich cultural and artistic memory, while also being adaptable to contemporary musical expressions.

Essaouira, a city with significant historical importance to Gnaoua music, serves as the cultural backdrop for the festival. The event connects this Moroccan heritage with The Hague, where Moroccan artists will collaborate with musicians based in the Netherlands. This exchange allows for the sharing of experiences and artistic techniques. The festival holds particular significance for the Moroccan community in the Netherlands, offering them a chance to engage with their musical heritage and introduce it to a broader audience, fostering cultural exchange between Morocco and the Netherlands.

The eighth edition will explore fusions of Gnaoua rhythms, which include the use of the guembri, krakebs, and collective singing, with other musical genres such as jazz, electronic music, and orchestral experiments. The program includes projects like 'Trans Sahara Electro', 'Elements of Baraka', 'Kalimba Quartet', and 'Super Gnawa Girls' with 'Marmoucha Orchestra', which offer diverse interpretations of Gnaoua rhythms while preserving the unique elements that define them.

These collaborations bring together musicians from different artistic backgrounds, allowing for improvisation and rhythmic interaction to develop shared works. The festival aims to go beyond traditional performances, encouraging joint creativity between teachers and students, and presenting Gnaoua music in new forms while maintaining its cultural roots.
