The New World Screwworm (NWS) infestation has spread to Arizona, marking the third state in the US affected by the parasitic flies. The infestation, which began in June, has now reached Arizona, following previous cases in New Mexico and Texas. In the past week, four dogs and one cat in Arizona have been attacked by the flesh-eating maggots.

The NWS flies lay hundreds of eggs in wounds and moist orifices of animals. The resulting maggots, which resemble screws, bore into living flesh, causing severe and potentially fatal wounds. The maggots eventually drop to the ground to develop into adult flies, continuing the cycle.

Since the re-invasion of the screwworms in the US, 74 animal cases have been identified across the three states. The infestation poses a significant threat to both domestic and wild animals, as the maggots can cause extensive tissue damage and even death if left untreated.

Local authorities and veterinary services have been working to contain the spread of the infestation. Efforts include treating affected animals, monitoring for new cases, and implementing measures to control the fly population. The public is advised to be vigilant and report any suspected cases to local authorities.

Pets and livestock owners are urged to inspect their animals regularly for any signs of wounds or irritation, as early detection and treatment are crucial in preventing the maggots from taking hold.
