Algeria's Ministry of National Education has announced a new evaluation system for first grade students starting from the 2026-2027 academic year. The new system will rely on descriptive and qualitative observations and assessments throughout the three school terms, replacing the previous numerical grading system.

The ministry's circular, dated October 24, 2024, outlines that evaluations for first grade students will be conducted termly, focusing on descriptive and qualitative notes that reflect the students' control over targeted competencies in each subject.

According to the new regulations, all students who have regularly attended first grade will automatically progress to second grade. This approach aims to monitor the development of students' competencies at the beginning of their educational journey, with a focus on their acquisition of fundamental skills, considering the unique nature of this educational stage.

The circular emphasizes that the calculation of averages in primary education remains unchanged, following the method used in the past two years. However, the first grade will have specific arrangements for evaluating learning outcomes and progression to the second grade.
